HISTORY OF SMART GLASS

A comprehensive guide

SMART PRIVACY GLASS:

Smart privacy glass, also known as switchable glass or privacy glass, is an innovative technology that allows for instant privacy control with the flick of a switch. It offers a solution to the age-old problem of balancing the need for privacy with the desire for natural light and open spaces in both residential and commercial settings. Smart privacy glass instantly transforms any glass window or partition into a private space using liquid crystal (LC) technology, becoming transparent when powered on.

HOW PDLC SMART GLASS WORKS

Smart privacy glass utilizes a technology called Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC). PDLC smart glass consists of a layer of liquid crystal molecules sandwiched between two layers of conductive material, typically glass. When an electrical current is applied to the conductive layers, the liquid crystal molecules align, allowing light to pass through and rendering the glass transparent. Conversely, when the electrical current is turned off, the molecules scatter randomly, creating an opaque appearance that obscures visibility.

TYPES OF SMART GLASS
TECHNOLOGIES

There are several types of smart glass technologies available, including electrochromic, thermochromic, and suspended particle device (SPD) glass. Each technology operates on different principles but ultimately achieves the same goal of controllable transparency.

COMPARISON WITH BLINDS
OR
CURTAINS

Comparing smart privacy glass to traditional window coverings like blinds or curtains, the former holds several advantages. While blinds and curtains require manual adjustment and can obstruct views even when open, smart glass offers instant and precise control over privacy and visibility without compromising on aesthetics.

MANUFACTURERS OF
SMART GLASS

To manufacture PDLC privacy films, you need a stable chemical mixture with a good history and feedback. Additionally, cleanrooms are necessary in production and lamination areas to avoid dust or spots during the process. With quality raw materials and professional and experienced staff, you will get a reliable and optimal product.

THE FUTURE OF SMART GLASS

The future of smart privacy glass looks promising, with ongoing advancements in technology leading to improved performance, durability, and cost-effectiveness. As demand for sustainable building solutions continues to grow, smart glass is poised to play a significant role in the construction industry.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
PNLC AND PDLC

One key difference between PDLC and PNLC (Polymer Network Liquid Crystal) technology lies in their molecular structure and switching mechanism. While PDLC utilizes dispersed liquid crystal molecules, PNLC employs a polymer network to control light transmission. Each technology has its own set of advantages and limitations, depending on the specific application. PNLC is transparent when powered off (reverse mode), and while it offers unique benefits, it is still in the commercialization phase and tends to be more expensive.
